FLINT -- Thomas Smith scored a pair of goals as Midland High beat Flint Powers 4-1 in nonleague hockey action on Wednesday night.

"It was a good win for us. We played three complete periods," Chemics' coach Jeff Brown said.

Smith got his first goal with four minutes left in the first period. He was assisted by Steve Trombley and Nick Mammel. Lukas Smillie put the Chemics up 2-0 just over a minute later with a goal assisted by Elliott Digison.

Smith got his second goal midway through the second period, assisted by Jason Regier. Phil Parks added the Chemics' final goal with 3:26 left in the second period, assisted by Forrest Parsch and Ryan Singer. The Chargers also scored their only goal in the second period.

Keith Inman was in goal for the Chemics, stopping 17 shots as Midland outshot Powers 27-18.

The Chemics (13-4) host Muskegon Mona Shores on Friday.

Mount Pleasant 3, Dow High 2

Dow High squandered its opportunities and lost 3-2 to Mount Pleasant on Wednesday in Saginaw Valley League hockey action at the Midland Civic Arena.

"We controlled play tonight," Chargers' coach Dick Blasy said of his team, which outshot the Oilers 39-14 on the night, holding them to one combined shot in the first and third periods. "But their goalie played really well, and we just couldn't finish."

Travis McNally put the Chargers up 1-0 six minutes into the second period, assisted by Zach Paisley and Conrad Lather.

But the Oilers scored a pair of goals, including one on a five-on-three power play, in the final three minutes of the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

The Oilers went up 3-1 in the third on their only shot of the period, before Lather scored with four minutes left in the game to make it 3-2. He was assisted by McNally and Paisley.

Dow's Tony Berta faced all the Oilers' shots in goal, making 11 saves. Derek Striker saw time in goal in the final period, but didn't face a shot.

Dow (8-8, 1-5 SVL) hosts DeWitt on Friday.
