Nick Mammel scored the game-winning goal with 1:14 left as Midland High clinched its third straight Saginaw Valley League hockey title outright on Wednesday night with a 2-1 SVL victory over Bay City at the Midland Civic Arena.
"It was definitely a hard-fought game," Chemics' coach Jeff Brown said. "They (Bay City) had a good game plan. They packed it in well and blocked a lot of shots. They really made us work hard for it. It was a good win, I'm proud of our guys."
Bay City scored in the first period and the Chemics didn't tie the game up until Thomas Smith scored with 10:27 left in the third period. He was assisted by Dan Freed and Mammel.
Mammel's game-winning goal was unassisted.
The Chemics outshot Bay City 33-26, with Keith Inman saving 25 shots for the Chemics in goal.
The Chemics (18-5, 7-0 SVL) finish up league play against Mount Pleasant at home next Wednesday.
Dow High 7, Goodrich 1
GOODRICH -- Sam Brushaber had a goal and five assists as Dow High beat Goodrich 7-1 on Wednesday evening in a nonleague hockey game.
Brushaber scored the first goal of the game for the Chargers in the first period, and assisted on the next five.
The Chargers poured it on early, scoring five times in the first period, and twice more in the second period.
Travis McNally scored twice for the Chargers. Also scoring were Matt Lee, David Laursen, Ethan Loftus, and Michael Leslie.
Lee and Steven Roberts each had two assists, while McNally, Laursen, Andrew Brookens, and Zach Paisley each had one assist.
Derek Striker made five saves in goal for the Chargers in the first period, and Tony Berta made 10 saves in goal in the last two periods.
The Chargers (12-10) play at Saginaw Heritage on Saturday.
